Contemporary Art Center
Tourist experience recommended by Montevideo Tourist Association.
The Contemporary Art Center is a place dedicated exclusively to contemporary art and its own problems.
It is located in one of the pavilions in the former Miguelete prison (1889-1986), the only one with a panoptic system in Uruguay, where from a central tower the guards could see all the inmates. Only one part of the prison was restored because the idea was to leave the other one like it was in order to observe it and also to do guided visits.
This museum is completely dedicated to the production and exhibition of contemporary art projects, where the seasons are changed approximately every 3 months using one or two cells only for each particular work.
The Contemporary Art Center has access by ramp and elevator.
