“José Pedro Varela” Pedagogical Museum
Tourist experience recommended by Montevideo Tourist Association.
It was founded in 1889 and its purpose is to publicize the progress made in pedagogy.
Its main purpose in its first stage was to serve as a laboratory for future teachers who were studying at the Normal Boarding School for Young Ladies, which occupied the top floor of the building.
On its ground floor, there was the School of Application of Young Ladies, a model school of the Reforma Vareliana (Varelian Reform), in which the students of the boarding school carried out their practice.
It is currently the only educational museum in the world.
The galleries show the history of the building and its origins at the service of the Varelian Reform, since the creation of the boarding school.
They also show the evolution of the school in the country exhibiting furniture, documents, school supplies and belongings of institutions and figures of the education.
