The building that the museum occupies belongs to the period of development of the XIX century of the country houses with an historicist styles of the Miguelete stream.

Since 1930 the building has been a municipal museum and in 1975 it was declared a National Historic Monument. It bears the name of the national painter Juan Manuel Blanes because the date is the hundredth anniversary of his birth.

The museum has two floors. The ground floor has six exhibition spaces: Juan Manuel Blanes room, Pedro Figari room, Dumas Oroño room, two rooms / galleries and a temporary exhibition room. On the ground floor are the deposits where the museum's collection is.
