The Old City
The Historic Quarter, representing the vivid history of Montevideo, known locally as the Old City, the origin was the Spanish military fortification.
It had stone walls that delimited the fortified city called ´´San Felipe and Santiago de Montevideo´´.
This was guarded by a fortress, called the Citadel. The structure that supported the entrance gate to the fortress is currently in its old place, between Independence Square and Sarandi Pedestrian walk, marking the imaginary beginning of the historic walk.
The tour of the Old City allows you to know and visit buildings of high heritage and architectural value, museums, exhibition halls, cafes, restaurants, design stores, bookstores, antique shops and a great shopping tour.
